In otherwise healthy people, occult indoor exposure may result in commonplace symptoms such as headache, dizziness, weakness, and difficulty in concentrating. In people with pre-existing disease, pollution alone may result in increased morbidity and mortality. Variable symptoms and signs make the poisoning difficult to detect and lead to serious outcomes. Multiple laboratory and image study can help us to detect and diagnose CO poisoning. Although the use of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is still controversial after many well-designed studies, many authors recommend the HBO in specific group. The other treatments, such as glucagon or steroid warrant further investigation. ED physicians have to learn to early detect the poisoning and to lower the morbidities and mortalities by appropriate management. (Ann Disaster Med. 2005; 4 Suppl 1:S8-S17)

Background and aimsCarbon monoxide poisoning is a major cause of mortality due to gasinhalation. It is more prevalent in winter, because of poor indoor ventilation. The purpose of ourstudy was to evaluate exhaled carbon monoxide of students and to estimate their exposure to this gas.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was performed in winter 2008. The exhaled carbonmonoxide level of 184 students ...

Effects of Erythropoietin on Electrocardiogram Changes in Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: an Experimental Study in Rats

The aim of this study was to define the electrocardiogram (ECG) changes following the moderate to severe CO intoxication in rats, and also evaluating the effect of erythropoietin (EPO) on observed cardiac disturbances. The growing literature on erythropoietin effect on cardiac ischemia led us to question its effect on cardiotoxicity due to the carbon monoxide poisoning. Wistar rats were exposed...

A Rare Cause of Chronic Headache that May Be Misdiagnosed as Migraine: Chronic Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Differential diagnosis of primary headache disorders can be challenging for physicians. Although the association of headache with acute carbon monoxide intoxication is very well-defined, in refractory nonspecific headaches associated with chronic low dose exposure to carbon monoxide, CO intoxication is usually overlooked, mostly due to vague symptoms. Herein we present a 15-year-old female pati...

Histopathological study of erythropoietin protective effect on carbon monoxide-induced cardiotoxicity in rat

Objective(s): Cardiotoxicity is one of the major consequences in carbon monoxide poisoning. Following our previous work, in this study we aimed to define the myocardium changes induced by carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication and evaluate erythropoietin (EPO) effect on CO cardiotoxicity in rat. Materials and Methods:  Severe carbon monoxide toxicity induced by 3000 ppm CO in Wistar rat.  EPO was ad...

Carbon monoxide poisoning: asymmetric and unilateral changes on CT.

Carbon monoxide intoxication is a known cause of damage to the central nervous system. The distribution of pathologic changes has been described [1, 2]. The characteristic CT changes have been described as symmetric lucencies in the globus pallidus and centrum semiovale [3]. We recently encountered a case of proven carbon monoxide intoxication in which the pallidal lesion was unilateral and the...
